I lived in France in the 70s. Horsemeat was relatively common, but a bit less than rabbit (like duck minus the greasiness, or a bit darker than dark chicken meat).

A decade before that, I spent summers on a dairy farm. Each of the girls had her own personality; a couple were perfectly OK with me riding cow-back (spectacularly uncomfortable so I did this very rarely). Most of us have no issue eating beef.
