I have to wonder how spread spectrum technology plays here.

SS essentially is spreading a message across a frequency range in a 'random' pattern, so your signal looks like noise to everyone else. Tech for removing noise is pretty good so it's possible for multiple parties to be concurrently transmitting/receiving. As I understand it, mobile comms (both GSM and CDMA) use this. The EEE journal Spectrum has a good tutorial.
