I grew up in a 'guns' household. Rule number one was "never point a gun at anything you don't intend to shoot". Number two was "always assume it's loaded". That latter one saved my ass when I was an undergrad (long story).

IMO the place to learn any kind of rifle handling is at the range, gun handling at the skeet or trap field - and targets should be paper or clay. Also, protect your damn hearing.
