“Johnston’s Fluid Beef,” later renamed Bovril (much catchier), became the most popular meat drink (yes, there are others) in Britain.

Having read some of the writings of Gandhi — and being an American — I had no idea what he was referring to then he wrote that he refused to drink ‘beef tea’. Looks like, yes, that was definitely a thing.

Speaking of alcohol, flu and prohibition, I’m pretty sure that the ‘apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is similar to Labatt’s promotion of their ale as a health drink. The Prohibitionists were also targeting hard cider — and chopping down apple orchards.
