Have you been to North America? It's... Big. Things that are practical to do in Europe or Japan are much harder here just due to the sheer distances involved. High speed rail, for instance. On top of that, our electrical grid is really not ready to deliver the necessary power to enough places - and the people involved have what I think of as a 'utility' mindset. Entrepreneurial people do not start careers at utilities. I am dealing with trying to get my local utility to provide sufficient capacity for my community to install about a dozen solar-roofed carports and as many level 2 chargers. It's been tens of thousands of dollars an nearly a year in delay. I gather that the rest of the country is no better.
Will we get this fixed? Sure. But, for now, a plug-in hybrid still makes sense here.
Personally, I would love the extra performance that comes from not dragging an ICE around, but we have a lake house where the power often goes out - and it's about 400km away. We travel distances like that routinely - did I mention the place is big? And we live in New England, where everything is closer together than the rest of the country.
