Good article! As far as any DNA therapies eliminating the Deaf community, well, people lose their hearing for a number of reasons.

My wife was a sign language interpreter for about a decade. I got to know a few people in that community. Nice folks - but almost all were stuck in low paying jobs, which would be very concerning if I was parent of a potentially deaf child.

I also got to know one person with Usher. Beyond heartbreaking to watch him lose his sight (and yes, there is signing for people without sight or hearing, but it's slow and awkward). If there's anything we can do to defeat that disease, we should do it and to hell with concerns about DNA therapies.
