Agreed 100%. But there are still plenty of ways to "get it wrong" in camera - and that gets easier when you're shooting JPEGs SOOC.
I learned on transparencies too (Velvia/Provia mostly).
Hobbyist here; I never turned pro - becoming a developer spoiled "coding as fun" for me, was leery of the same thing happening with photography. Although the idea of treating camera equipment as tax deductions was always appealing :-)
