For an over-the-counter alternative, Benadryl...

Benadryl, depending on where you are in the world, comes as different compounds. I'm in the US and all I see is diphenhydramine. I've read that it's cetirizine in the UK and elsewhere.

And... there's a correlation between long term anticholinergic (which is what diphenhydramine is) use and dementia. Cetirizine is listed as an ‘anticholinergic drugs (with lesser anticholinergic effect)’ so maybe be cautious with that one, too. (BTW, here in the US, it’s in Zyrtec.)
