It's interesting how that might have arisen. As I understand it, the great apes (our closest relatives) aren't 'hinged' in a way that enables throwing a blow, landing through the knuckles. Given that our most recent common ancestor probably lived in trees, it's probably something our line developed as we left arboreal life.
