I've been a substitute teacher - at a quite competent MA high school. It seems that until you've been there for about a week, you're not 'real' - and even then, you're a member of an underclass.
FWIW, I was in high tech, startup had just failed, was figuring out what I wanted to do next. I'd taught college students for a semester when I first got out of grad school, thought HS might be similar. It's not even close - I'm not a disciplinarian, hate having to do it. Got a call from another startup staffing up - and I was gone.
