Ex-film (zone system) guy here. As you mention, negatives are resilient to overexposure, but as I learned when switching to transparancies, it's the opposite there (more resilience in the shadows, anything overexposed is just clear film). Digital is similarly sensitive to overexposure - but that's off topic here.
