Engineer here. This article seems on point.

We do think differently — and are motivated by different things, primarily interesting problems or the chance to learn something new. The best example I can come up with is an anecdote from a couple of decades back:

I was working at a company that was moderately successful. The head of Engineering moved on to greener pastures. Mahogany row saw fit to move the head of Sales into the position. We typically had ‘pizza Fridays’ where all engineers would get together, eat pizza and talk about our current tech challenges. Our new head of Engineering got up — and tried to motivate everyone through fear (of losing a job) and greed. It fell pretty flat — and left many of us with a different view of the Sales folks. Oh, and that head of Engineering lasted maybe a bit longer than Scarramucci — but not much.
