Don't forget the energy required to make a battery pack - and a good portion of the world's electricity is from less-efficient way-dirtier coal.
OTOH, the automotive cooling system causes a lot of drag (costs energy to shove air through a radiator). On the racetrack, we used to block off as much of the cooling system as we thought we could get away with and still have an undamaged engine at the end - just to reduce drag. To be fair, air resistance goes up with the square (cube?) of speed, and the point wasn't to go slow.
