Don't forget advances in battery technology - making solar/wind generated energy available all the time, and localized generation and storage makes the grid less necessary. Places with unreliable grid infrastructure, like Puerto Rico, desperately need this.

I'm in MA. My utility company offers not just rebated for anyone who installs battery storage (e.g. Batterywall) but will also pay to use that storage to smooth demand. But we're lucky: MA utilities have decoupled the charge for electricity generation and the one for transmission, and are strongly encouraging residential solar (both through rebates, and by purchasing the power at wholesale rates)
