Gotta wonder if it's inhibiting the production of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) - something that can cause enterocytes (epithelial cells lining the gut) to loosen their 'tight' junctions.

There are some interesting connections between serum LPS and degenerative conditions, notably dementia. It's still an open question, but I'd guess it has a lot to do with dysregulating the blood brain barrier (which is more a number of processes and pumps working together PLUS capillary epithelial cells held together with tight junctions than a solid barrier the way I first assumed).
