BTW/FWIW, I'm one of that 50,000. Right place, right time. I had no idea then-president Ford would show up in the hotel office to thank us all. I did get to say: "You did the right thing, sir." and his face lit up. For those who don't know, he pardoned Nixon; in the process he trashed his career. I didn't agree with the pardon but very much respected that he'd put the nation before his own future. But there's no way to say all that during a handshake.
