BTW/FWIW, consider that some climates reduce the indoor square footage you need. For instance, my MIL moved to a *tiny* condo in the Honolulu area. She liked it fine as she could be outdoors most of the time. Very good health care, good enough bus coverage she had no need of a car.

I'm mentioning this as Hawai'i probably isn't on anyone's radar as a lower cost place to consider.
