Both beer and sake are brewed to be drunk at a particular temperature. Lighter beers, like Pilsners work best at cool temperatures and are typically brewed for a flavor profile at that temperature. Darker ones are typically targeted at less cool temperatures.

Similarly, there are now sakes not intended to be drunk hot/warm.

Personally, I prefer darker beer/ale at 'cellar' temp - but that's just me (and it sounds like maybe you, too).
