As an android user, I’m annoyed.
At one point, Garmin had a weather app for Android. It was very good, but not available on Google Play (Amazon only) due to some disagreement between Garmin and Google.
Having used Garmin’s for-private-pilots app, their weather app was pretty much everything weather related from that app minus the flying specific parts (ceiling, visibility, etc.). It didn’t have any weather info not available in their for-pilots app (e.g. no ground accumulation in either — keeping runways clear was was for FBOs to deal with)
They eventually dropped it, shut down the servers. I suspect their issue was, simply, that it wasn’t making enough money to keep the servers up and running. At the time, there weren’t any subscription Android apps other than high-end (like their for-pilots one) — and they didn’t see a way to segue buy-once app users into subscription payers.
I would have been glad to pay a monthly fee to use it. I’m hoping Garmin sees this as an opportunity and jumps in.
Anyone from Garmin out there?
