As an American citizen who travelled around Europe in the 70s (long before the EU) I discovered that just having any of my passport cover showing meant I would not be woken during any train trips that crossed a border after dark.

BTW/FWIW, US passports were a distinctive shade of dark green then. Anyone know why they shifted to dark blue?
