As a side note, if you're shooting with a Nikon F series body and want to try macro, look for a used Nikkor 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 D. Nice 'convertible' lens (switches between tele and macro). Fairly flat plane of focus*, short minimum distance. I see them for under $100 on eBay. It's a film era lens, so an older coating tech - but you wouldn't know it unless you have a point-source of light in frame (blobs) or shining on the front element (veiling). I bought one aaages ago to use with my F100, still works great.
