Another oyster lover here.
The last time my wife and I were in Charleston, SC, I kept asking locals where the best oysters were to be had. I got the answer "Bowens Island" almost every time. Turns out they were talking about the one restaurant on (tiny) Bowens Island creatively named "Bowens Island Restaurant". One of the menu items was "oysters: all you can eat". I ordered that, because... of course I did.
SC oysters are different from the northern ones you and I are used to. They grow on top of each other, making a block of oyster shell that's a 3D puzzle to take apart. Also, they're dipped in boiling water to make them easier to open. The taste is a bit different, too. Good... just different, maybe a bit more coppery tasting than New England oysters (but I get that same reaction when I eat SF oysters)
As I remember, there were a few condiments supplied - but I typically don't bother.
Also, I think it was under $40. They just kept bringing what appeared to be cafeteria trays piled 6-9 inches tall with blocks of oyster-puzzles.
If you're in Charleston, it's totally worth the drive (near Foley beach, if that helps).
