Animal Farm was pretty clearly a response to the takeover of the Russian Revolution by the Bolsheviks. I’d take both that novel and 1984 as anti-totalitarianism rather than anti-socialist. If you read his Down and Out, you’ll see he definitely understood the downsides of being poor in a capitalist country.
