Not just Viking raids. There was an entire part of the British Isle under control of the 'Danes' - called the 'Danelaw'. At the time, the king of Denmark was pretty much the king of all Scandinavia.

I'm fascinated with the Danelaw as it appears that we have the Danes there (particularly the ones that picked up the English of the time as adult learners) to thank for a vast simplification of our language.
