That's not to say changing perspective is bad. I'd argue that Gould's "selfish gene" was a useful change in perspective - albeit not as important as the notion of proticity (everything being driven via a proton differential across membranes) which has brought insight to the way metabolism can self-start in chemically similar circumstances.
