Agreed that 'hybrid' isn't appropriate for long-haul trucking, but there's plenty of short-haul and offroad applications that the Tesla approach isn't appropriate for either.
I don't really follow diesel development, more of a motorhead from my bike shop days; I read a lot of theoretical stuff, including Riccardo's classic work.
BTW, in the marine world, there have been some interesting developments in 'modular nuclear' which is generator / electric; 'modular' so it's removable for reprocessing when the vessel reaches end of life so as to not have the same issues the USN has with decommissioning nuclear powered warships.
Oh, and IMO using long haul trucking to move goods in excess of 500 miles is the wrong approach. I just wish we'd figured out how to make multi-modal work... :-(
