>>African Americans are 1.7 times more likely than whites, had Hispanics have a 1.2 times higher risk than non-Hispanics.

I take this to be more racial inequality in the healthcare system than anything genetic. Just look at childbirth mortality or Covid-19 fatality rates.

Also (and as a white guy I'm aware of stepping out of my lane here) I'd expect the effects of being subject to racism means chronic stress, so more cortisol, leading to things like higher insulin levels and T-cell exhaustion. Wishing the world was a better place for these folks.

Also, that middle word in RSV - syncytial - is pronounced sin-sish-al (had to go find a pronunciation guide, figure I'm not the only one without a clue there).

Finally, in addition to what's suggested here, I'm doing a couple of things. If I think I'm starting to come down with something, I use a nasal steamer a couple of times a day. There's evidence that influenza first starts in the sinuses and that raising temperatures there might make it less effective. No clinical data on that, but it seems to work for me.

I also use zinc acetate lozenges multiple times a day when I get the very beginnings of a scratchy throat. There is some RCT data indicating that acetate is about 2x more effective than gluconate, which in turn is more effective than the others - and only lozenges do anything (throat tissues need to be bathed). Also works for me. But until there are more studies, count these as folk remedies that might help.
