A lot of Zhukov's recognition comes down survival, and that to timing.

Yes, he was a military genius, but, up to that point, being a successful military leader in the USSR was a very, very dangerous thing.

One of the reasons Hitler went ahead with Barbarossa was that Stalin had killed off pretty much all his competent general officers, making the moment seem opportune, even though GB had yet to fall.
